Chocolate as an Aphrodisiac

We have always known how chocolate makes most of us feel. It has helped many people when they are down and has given a boost to those feeling like they are burning the candle at both ends. But, chocolate has also been known for its aphrodisiac qualities. We give chocolate to our loved ones on Valentine's Day, so that (let's be honest) they will give you a little sugar in return.

The ancient Aztecs regarded chocolate to be such a strong aphrodisiac that King Montezuma would drink up to 50 cups of it a day to satisfy his large harem.
The Mayans also drank it as a fertility boost. Even going as far as to exchange a chocolate drink flavoured with spices such as vanilla and chilli peppers as a part of their marriage ceremony.
When it was introduced to Europeans they carried on the association between chocolate and love. Chocolate has Phenylethylamine, an agent that peaks when you fall in love, and surges through the brain during orgasm. It also has Serotonin, a neurotransmitter that produces the same feelings of pleasure as being in sunlight. Phenylethylamine and Seratonin, which are mood lifting agents found naturally in thebrain are released into the nervous system by the brain when we are happy and experiencing feeling like love, lust, and passion. This causes a rise in blood pressure and increased heart rate, leading to feelings of well being. These feelings of euphoria makes us feel like we're in love. It's a great feeling.

Chocolate also releases Phenylethylamine and Seratonin into the system inducing the same euphoric feeling. It also gives a substantial energy boost increasing stamina when you really need it. So it's easy to see why chocolate has the reputation of being an Aphrodisiac.

Women tend to be more susceptible to the effects of chocolate than men, as eating it is also a very sesual experience. The sound of it snapping when you break a piece off, the color and smooth feel of it in your mouth, and the sweet aromas as it melts in your mouth leaves any woman feeling euphoric.

So,is Chocolate an aphrodisiac? We think the most satisfying way to test this is do carry out the experiment yourselves. Sit down with a glass of red wine and a fine chocolate (preferably one of our FUN SWEET SEXY TREATS recipes), put some soft music on and surrender yourselves to the sensual experience.
